Shopify Ad Reporting: How to Build a Source-Aware Paid-Media Report

A good report explains what changed and where to investigate next. It should not hide missing data behind a complete-looking dashboard.

01

A report needs scope before it needs charts.

Every report should make the date range, comparison period, advertising account, provider, currency, and time-zone assumptions clear. Without those boundaries, two correct screens can appear to disagree simply because they are measuring different slices of the business.

The scope should travel with drill-down views and cached results. If a merchant selects one ad account, downstream campaign, creative, Product × Ads, and report data should remain inside that authorized account.

02

Organize the report from outcome to explanation.

Start with store and paid-media movement, then show the entities that explain the change. Campaign and creative summaries should link to the product and commerce context when mappings exist. Product sections should reveal whether advertising, contribution, refunds, or inventory materially changes the interpretation.

This structure makes the report navigable. A merchant does not need every metric on the first screen; they need a reliable path from a change to the evidence underneath it.

  • Business outcome summary.
  • Provider/account performance movement.
  • Campaign and creative contributors.
  • Product × Ads and inventory context.
  • Data limitations and unavailable metrics.
03

Make unavailable states part of the report design.

A professional report should be comfortable saying that a value is unavailable. Missing product mapping, incompatible currency, incomplete history, or an unconnected provider should not become zero simply to make every card render.

Clear unavailable states protect downstream calculations and make the report easier to trust because the merchant can distinguish 'nothing happened' from 'we do not have enough evidence to say.'

FAQ

Questions this guide should answer

What should a Shopify ad report include?

Include clear scope, store outcomes, provider-native paid-media metrics, campaign and creative contributors, product-level context, inventory where relevant, and visible data limitations.

Should ad reports use Shopify or ad-platform revenue?

Use the source appropriate to the question and label it. Shopify revenue and provider-attributed revenue should not be silently treated as the same measure.

How should missing data appear in a report?

As unavailable or incomplete when the required evidence is absent. Zero should be reserved for a known measured zero.
